Cy Twombly Somehow | CHOUINARD

She sees producing a ballet as akin to the work of a visual artist. As well as handling her own costume-making, make-up, set design and lighting for her ballets (leaving the music to Louis Dufort with whom she has collaborated for over twenty years now, and who composed an original score for the piece), the similarities with visual art extend even further: after four days of rehearsals, Marie Chouinard and her fifteen dancers lock down what she calls «an epic 30-minute outline», with roughly the same running time as the piece itself. The artist admits that she hasn’t always worked this way, and that the approach may be a fairly unusual one. As a general rule, choreographers piece together their ballets sequence by sequence before linking the sequences together. With her method, a few sessions are all it takes to reach a rough draft sketched out on the blank canvas of the dance mats. Next, she proceeds in dabs to accentuate the contours of the piece and highlight details here and there. The process is reminiscent of some works by Cy Twombly, especially those from the 1960s, in which the painter used his hands directly on his canvases to create his own world, turning them into white surfaces open to taking on whatever sign the artist chose to lay down. The choreographer won’t say anything more about what we can expect. Audience members are invited to delve into the powerful imagination of this figurehead of contemporary dance, and to discover for themselves the multi-faceted spirit of this piece created especially for the Ballets de Monte-Carlo.
