Le Temps du Tendre | GUÉRIN

Among our essential reasons for living, love — true love shared — has always remained the most elusive and unintelligible of emotions: without it, life is neither possible nor worth living. It is the driving force that moves us, empowers us, embraces us and sometimes even overpowers us: an overwhelming attachment to someone else, sublimated or incarnate.

Le Temps du Tendre suggests a heuristic approach to experiencing love, as mapped out in the 17th century as an ideal journey.

This intentionally didactic Carte de Tendre is presented as an initiatory pathway to discover the loved one, the feelings born of this meeting and the conquest of that object of desire, for which equal emotional reciprocity is required to sustain and sublimate Love/the Tendre.

Because this map is not the territory, sincere authentic genuine love is difficult to attain and recognise.

Thus, perseverance, courage and determination become the requisite virtues to overcome disillusion, discomfiture and errancy. These irresolute transports of the heart will be personified by a traveler whose footsteps we will take.

Over the seasons, Le Temps du Tendre, illustrates this allegory of romantic love, avoiding the hazards of passion and affectation and showing how, with volition, it is possible to learn and especially conjugate the verb ‘to love’. (Julien Guérin)
