Men's Dance for Women
Men's Dance for Women
J-Ch. Maillot
« ... Men’s Dance for Women begins with a septet of male dancers followed by an ensemble of 18 females to music composed by Steve Reich. What is it all about? The fascination of a group of boys for the beautiful image of a female dancer projected on the stage. If desire is reigned in, so is the construction. Maillot treats the groups as a whole, all while pulling the individual units apart from time to time. He shifts the movement from one dancer to the next much like an accordion can be bellowed or a deck of cards riffled. Then he resolves the ensembles. Gesture follows argument: the muscular boys mime their curiosity. The able girls draw all they can out of the threads of sensuality. This ode to women is irresistible. »
