A magic formula that took hold of Jean-Christophe Maillot during his encounter with the composer Yan Marez, three years ago. Together, they plunged into the adventure of giving music a retinal vision.

From One Side to Another …

The results of a deep complicity between the musically inclined choreographer who creates and directs his movements to the letter of the notes, and  a composer who, at the request of the choreographer, writes the score using 65 musicians of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, then recomposes it electronically, daily monitoring the evolution of the choreographic process.

Thus, Jean-Christophe Maillot’s piece will tell a story, as always, but this time without Perrault or Tchaïkovsky; no literary script, rather an approaching anniversary; soon ten years that the choreographer has held the reigns of the Ballets de Monte-Carlo.

On the path where he constantly meanders from one side to the other, Jean-Christophe Maillot takes a pause: whether classic or contemporary; narrative or abstract; orchestral scoring or electronics, it is an alternating process wherein lies deep reflection on the legitimacy of his choice of the road to follow.

In his relationship with the dancers, it is the moment to tread the human dimension in the choreographic creative process; for this, the choreographic writing reveals what is behind-the-scenes; the rehearsals in the Atelier, the joys and the inevitable frustrations.

Today, the choreographer asks his public to evolve with him during each step of the way, to place enough confidence in him to provide the element of surprise.
