Les Nuls - Pulcinella | VERBRUGGEN

Despised because of his appearance, Pulcinella is the Comedia del arte character on whom all types of harassment rain down. In his instinctive and physical style, Jeroen Verbruggen, revisits this Ballets Russes character through an interpretation which highlights the way in which marginal people are stigmatised today. For the choreographer, the rejects, the “losers,” are worth more than we believe. At a time when ridicule has become the great distraction, Jeroen Verbruggen offers us a knockout production which leaves an indelible mark.

“Pulcinella symbolises for me a kind of counter-culture in which minorities can recognise themselves. These minorities circulate, survive in this society which rejects them. They express themselves like a loud and wild stage design and costumes. Pulcinella thus takes on a universal dimension. He shows us how the world operates, from birth which makes us unequal, until death which unites us all. My ballet gives these scorned people value, these “nuls” [dummies] (Nulla) who are very often one step ahead of everyone else. Women particularly appear to be the real brains in this story of men. They pull the strings in this intrigue which, like the ouroboros symbol, is never-ending." Jeroen Verbruggen
