THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

Jean-Christophe Maillot

With The Taming of the Shrew, Jean-Christophe Maillot has found himself in an unprecedented position of bringing to Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo a production made for dancers other than his own. This adaptation of the play, born in 2014 of a meeting of minds with the Bolshoi Ballet, was his very first creation for another company since his arrival in Monaco 25 years ago. It proved a runaway success in Moscow as well as on foreign tours. Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo’s dancers perfectly embodied Shakespeare’s characters of this ballet, rewarded with three Golden Masks!

« A rollicking, rumbustious and romantic production charts the unlikely relationship between Katharina and Petruccio. Maillot’s slick choreography, which gives a distinctive athletic spin to the elegance of the classical language. » The Times

« Rollicking reinvention tames a tricky text. Maillot knows how to handle narrative, deftly switching the mood from serious to comic, and his movement is fully of invention, gesture and angular quirks. » London Evening Standard
