New Sleep | FORSYTHE

World Premiere by the San Francisco Ballet, on February 1st, 1987, San Francisco USA
Premiere by Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, on July 16th 2014, Salle Garnier Opéra de Monte-Carlo

Major work of William Forsythe created in 1987, New Sleep is making evolve the dancers in two diagonals crossing in their middle, driving the art of choreographic composition to attain precision level rarely achieved before.
Impeccable in mechanical strictness but at the same time carnal by the exceptional enhancing of the dancer’s body, New Sleep is propelling the classical dance into the symmetric and orthogonal universe that reveals the choreographers aspiration for the perpendicular but never severe architecture.

If Forsyth’s dance, often supported by Tom Willem’s music doesn’t tolerate any approximation, it has nevertheless some mischievousness and unusual elements that give it an irrational touch. New Sleep uniting the theatre and the dance explores this path with a rare talent that reveals in this emblematical choreographer his capacity of deconstructing the classical vocabulary without however scattering it.
Always in tension and perpetual spreading, peaces of Forsythe are before all generous. They witness the desire to explore the most audacious and contemporary horizons without making it poor or giving a way to the scarce movement.
