In Memoriam | CHERKAOUI

When the living are no longer, they become a memory… In truth, the dead remain with us only through the memories of the living. Reality is not memory, and memory is not reality. But reaching back into the remembrances of our past helps us better grasp the reality of the present. While clearly our forebears, our parents and our childhood define who we are today and what we will become tomorrow, can the present not also define that past? Our roots are thus like those of a tree, spanning as far out as its branches. Some archaic rituals use dance to honor the dead, but could it be that it is the dead who inhabit the living? This bond between reality and memory is at the core of In Memoriam.
The contemporary compositions of A Filetta, a group drawing their inspiration from the oral Corsican musical tradition, embody this connection between the past and the here and now. Like the costumes by Hedi Slimane, they assert that tradition can only exist when it is reinvented in the present.
From memory, the dancers create the reality of a performance in which they explore the movements of attraction and repulsion, magnetism and antimagnetism, in order to examine the meaning of the word "harmony". Tenderness (attraction) and aggression (repulsion) spring from the same source in an intimate game of polarization.
They relate the way caresses and blows remain deeply etched into our bodies.
Between what is here and what is no longer, movements and memories weave themselves together beneath the roots of a world racing through the present.
